A GROUND-UP INITIATIVE TO HELP SME OWNERS GET BACK ON THEIR FEET

WHY?

• SME owners form 0.5% of our population
• These are the entrepreneurs, the movers, the shakers and the JOB CREATORS
• Should SME owners lose their business, lose hope, they will not be able to create jobs for Singaporeans

WHY?

• We are trying to control the loss of employment
• There is much focus on migrant workers, low-wage workers, the destitute, the elderly who have lose their jobs – looking after them now is a stop-gap measure
• More will lose their jobs in the near future if we do not do anything to help our SME business owners – people who can continue creating jobs for others
• Business owners have the passion for people, and tenacity to learn and the risk appetite to try to innovate to make their lives and that of that families and staff better

FOCUS ON LONG TERM ECONOMIC RESILIENCE

• If we help our SMEs today to pivot and go digital, they will be able to continue their business.
• They will not have to close businesses with 10 years of knowledge and expertise
• Businesses with 10 years of goodwill and customer loyalty
• Businesses built with the sweat and tears of Singaporeans
• It is possible for most businesses to develop digital capabilities and stay in business
• Thus we must try – to preserve businesses and to preserve jobs

FUNDS TO BE RAISED

• $1,000,000 to benefit 1,000 SMES
• 1 FREE website each for 1,000 SMEs

• Private funders/foundations/investment groups for CSR purpose
• Freelance web developers
• Freelance writers
• Freelance designers

FUNDING USE

• Purchase of domain name and server
• Digital business consultancy (assess suitability of business by ENCE)
• Development of go digital plan (by ENCE team of marketers)
• Consolidation of company information for website (by ENCE team of marketers and others)
• Copywriting for website (by ENCE writers and others)
• Design of website (by ENCE designers and others)
• Programming of 5 page basic website (by ENCE web programmers and web partners)
• Installation of e-commerce capabilities/social media marketing/online marketing capabilities
• Hosting of website for 1 year

WHO WILL BE ELIGIBLE FOR THE FREE WEBSITE?

• Any SME who has not developed a website for his existing business
• ACRA-registered
• In operation for more than 5 years, revenue of less than S$1m a year
• Does not have any website for any of his/her business and other businesses (has no understanding of how to develop a website)
• Business has potential to attract and develop online customer base
• Business owner’s annual income not more than S$30,000 (based on IR8A)
• Ideal for cafes, bakeries, single outlet restaurants, single outlet retail stores, kiosks, hawkers, service businesses (delivery, transport, rental, trainers, manicurists, magicians, performers, traders), professional services (corporate secretaries, accountants, consultants)

BENEFICIARIES

• SME owners – give them hope and drive to persevere in running a business, and they are not alone (provide mental and emotional support)
• The business – survives to thrive in the future instead of starting from ground zero and wasting years of hard word
• Their employees – continue to be employed, some will be retrained with digital skills
• Self-Employed Persons (SEPs) – freelance writers, designers and web programmers will benefit and continue being employed

HAVING NO WEBSITE IS NOT THE PROBLEM

• Sometimes its not the cost of the website that is the issue
• It could be the understanding and knowledge of digital tools that is lacking
• And the owner does not know where to start to look for quotes, speak to the right consultant or vendor
• Many may have been left high and dry by vendors because a mismatch in expectations and abilities would have caused the website to be abandoned
• And the lack of a skilled person within their company to help manage to digital aspects
• We hope that this will encourage the non-tech savvy business owner to look to learning and developing digital capabilities for his business

• Seamless and hassle-free website for the SME as we take charge of the entire project and give the SME owner direction where necessary (from experience, we do everything and the SME owner just says what he does not like and what is incorrect and we make amendments)
• Keep freelancers employed!

LIMITATIONS

• 1 website per SME owner per brand/company
• Limited to 5 pages
• Pictures to be provided by SME. We will touch up minimally
• After website is developed, the SME is given 1 one-week timeline to make text and image corrections
• Hosted on Huawei server for one year for free
• Maintenance on website free for a year, and/or for up to 50 bits of text and image changes (whichever comes first)

IN RETURN #PayItForward

• The recipient SME is to pledge to learn how to go digital and to make his business work in the digital economy
• The recipient SME will be asked to contribute 5-10% of his sales to charity or a fellow SME who needs help to go digital
